Faculty Lectures

  • Georgetown College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Benjamin Harbert, Chair of the Department of Performing Arts | Copley Hall, Copley Formal Lounge
“The Politics of Performance: Music at Angola Prison” Ethnomusicologist Benjamin J. Harbert will discuss his historical and ethnographic research at Louisiana’s Angola Prison, the United States’ largest and one of its most infamous prisons. Harbert’s work examines the surprising musical legacy within this institution, documenting the lives of numerous musicians and bands over 120 years. His research reveals how music has served as a crucial, albeit conditional, resource for prisoners, skillfully managed by the administration for various purposes. This talk will highlight the role of jazz from the 1950s through the 1960s. The stories of these musicians offer a unique perspective on the intersection of incarceration, politics, and musical development in the twentieth-century American South.
  • School of Nursing | Saint Mary’s Hall 107
“Reducing Patient Wait Times in a Primary Care Setting to Improve Patient Satisfaction.” Dr. Amy Bronick, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), will present her research on prolonged wait times in the primary care setting and the impact this has on patient satisfaction and, ultimately, patient outcomes.
  • Walsh School of Foreign Service | Healy Hall, Gaston Hall
“How Bad is the Terrorism Problem Today?” Professor Daniel Byman will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of major terrorist threats, the effectiveness of U.S. and allied counterterrorism, and the overall danger of terrorism in the world today.
  • McDonough School of Business | Lohrfink Auditorium, 2nd Floor Hariri Building
Professor Mario Ramirez invites you to his Faculty Lecture, “Making Sense of Today’s Global World.” Globalization has increasingly become a divisive term, and the inexorable march towards Thomas Friedman’s flat world may not be as straightforward as we once assumed. Instead, issues such as climate change, the impact of AI or other technological changes, or economic inequality threaten to derail our march towards progress and prosperity. Understanding how to systematically analyze the interactions between and shared interests across relevant stakeholders — governments, the private sector, and civil society — will be critically important to how our society will navigate these headwinds.
